In 1981, the Government of India decided to convert the royal train into a luxury train. The results come in the form of Palace on Wheels. It was started with the Moto, to make unique and unforgettable experience of India Visit. The interiors of the train are thematically decorated on the lines of erstwhile Kingdom of Rajasthan.

The Palace on Wheels journey has been ranked in the top ten luxury train journeys throughout the world. It offers you, an amazing seven-day journey of the majestic state of Rajasthan, starting from Delhi and it covering Jaipur - The Pink City, Jaisalmer - The Golden City, Jodhpur – The Sun City, Ranthambore – The Wildlife Tiger sanctuary and Udaipur – The Romantic City of Rajasthan, Fatehpur Sikri – A deserted desert town, built in the 16th century by the Grand Mogul ruler Akbar, and Agra- The crown of Mughal’s Culture before returning to Delhi.

The all 14 coaches of Palace on Wheels are decorated in ethnic Rajasthani decoration. Every coach of the Palace on Wheels has been named after the erstwhile princely states. The names are Jaipur, Jodhpur, Alwar, Bundi, Kota, Jhalawar, Dungarpur, Dholpur, Bharatpur, Jaisalmer, Sirohi, Bikaner, Udaipur and Kishangarh. Every coach having four twin bedded chambers with attached washrooms, a mini pantry, a lounge to relax, Channel Music, intercom and wall-to-wall carpeting. There is a glittering lounge bar serving a Variety of liquor and food followed by two impressive Restaurant cars ‘Maharaja’ and ‘Maharani’ serving table.
The hotel menu with an exotic blend of Indian, Western and Rajasthani specialties.

NEW DELHI: Reporting Time 1600 hours
A warm, traditional welcome before the Palace-on-Wheels pulls out into the night for a week-long luxury cruise through fascinating Rajasthan.
Departure at 1745 hours

Day 02: Thursday
JAIPUR: (Early morning): Arrival at 0300 hours
Morning: Breakfast on board. After breakfast Sightseeing Tour of Palace of Winds (Hawa Mahal) & Amber Fort with Elephant Ride.
Afternoon: Lunch at Restaurant of a Five Star Hotel. After lunch Sightseeing Tour of Palace of City Palace Museum & Observatory (Jantar Mantar).
Departure at 1800 hours
Evening: Dinner on board.

Day 03: Friday
JAISALMER: Arrival at 0700 hours
Morning: Breakfast on board. After breakfast Sightseeing Tour of Gadisar artificial Lake, Jaisalmer Fort, Jain Temples and Havelis (Patrician Houses).
Afternoon: Lunch on board & rest.
Late Afternoon: Excursion to Sam Sand Dunes (50 kms.) experience the thrill of a camel ride and Enjoy sunset from Sand dunes.
Evening: Dinner and the cultural programme at Five Star Hotel

Day 04: Saturday
Arrival at 0700 hours
Morning: Breakfast on board.
After breakfast Sightseeing tour of Mahrangarh Fort-Museum with panoramic View View of Jodhpur City and Jaswant Thada (Royal Cenotaphs)
Afternoon: Lunch at Hotel Umaid Bhawan Palace or a Heritage Hotel.

Day 05: Sunday
RANTHAMBHORE (Sawai Madhopur): Arrival 0400 hours
Early morning: (0630 – 0930 hours): A Jungle Wildlife Tour of Ranthambore National Park. After Jungle Safari: Wash & change and Breakfast on board.
Departure at 1030 hours
Afternoon: Lunch on board.
Arrival 1600 hours
After arrival: Sightseeing of Chittorgarh Fort, Tower of Victory (Vijay Stambh) and Tower of Fame (Kirti Stambh)
Evening: Dinner on board

Day 06: Monday
CHITTORGARH: Departure at 0530 hours.
UDAIPUR: Arrival at 0730 Hours
Morning: Breakfast on board.0700 hours: Early morning Train arrives in Udaipur
0730 hours : Breakfast on board.
After breakfast: Sightseeing Tour of Jagdish Temple, City Palace Museum, Maharani's Friend Garden (Sahelion Ki Bari).
Afternoon: Lunch at a Heritage Hotel.
After lunch: Enjoy Boat Riding at lake Pichola around Lake Palace Hotel.
Departure at 1730 hours
Evening: Dinner on board.

Day 07: Tuesday
BHARATPUR: Arrival at 0630 hours
Morning: To explore Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (Keoladeo Ghana National Park): Enjoy Bird Watching Tour on
paddle driven Richshaw. Late breakfast on board.
Departure at 0930 hours
AGRA: Arrival 1200 hours
Upon arrival Sightseeing Tour of (Red Fort) Agra Fort.
Afternoon: Lunch at a Five Star Hotel.
After lunch: Sightseeing Tour of Taj Mahal
Evening: Dinner on board.
Departure at 2100 hours

Day 08: Wednesday
DELHI: Arrival at 0600 hours
Morning: Breakfast on board.
After breakfast: The Tour End.

1. Half fare for children between 5 years and 12 years of age.
2. Service Tax @ 2.575% and Commercial tax @US $ 15 per person extra as applicable.
3. There will be a 10% surcharge levied on the tariff for the trips falling during Christmas (25th December) and New Year.
4. Tariff is inclusive of cost of travel and accommodation, catering (morning tea, breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner), conducted sightseeing tours in deluxe coaches, entrance fee for monuments and palaces and cultural entertainment and camel ride at Jaisalmer, boat ride at Udaipur and rickshaw ride at Bharatpur.

Dos and Don'ts for Palace on Wheels

There are some general travel tips that should be followed while traveling onboard the Palace on Wheels.

  • It is advisable to hire guides registered with the Government of India. Try to avoid private guides as far as possible.
  • The sunrays in Rajasthan are quite strong, especially in summers. It is advisable to wear sunglasses, caps and parasols.
  • Railway staff is required to wear ID Cards at all times. In case any member of the staff is not carrying the same, it is better to be wary of him/her.
